BEAUTIFUL OLD 20" x 30" OIL ON CANVAS BY LISTED ARTIST JOSEPH MALACHY KAVANAGH, BRITISH, 1856 - 1919. Purchased from the estate of a priest in 1996. It has an address sticker on the back from another priest from Schenectady, NY. This painting is of a Novice about to "get busted" for smoking a pipe! Although Kavanagh is known for painting religious subjects, this one also shows the British humor. The painting is in good condition considering its age, with the exception of a 4" slit in the center bottom of the canvas with some paint loss around it. The overall color is still good. I believe the beautiful old frame is original to the piece but it is also in need of restoration. Kavanagh is listed in several art reference guides.
